I don’t recall seeing the original staging of this show years ago, but this version was ably done. The four actors are talented. It was sort of a sketch-dramedy (with singing; I appreciated the way it opened with “Barret’s Privateers”), but I wasn’t particularly moved. Some parts were quite funny though.
Rom Com
Kind of an experiment in hitting all of the rom-com tropes. It was entertaining, but I thought some of the acting was a bit on the weak side, and the direction and action on the stage was a bit forced. Mind you, a fair bit of the latter was probably intentional; there were some self-references during the show which suggested that.
Murder and Other Trivialities
One particularly good actor in the group, which performed three short works. Each work was interesting, and the characters had some depth, but I still came away feeling the three pieces were still a bit weak story-wise.
Red Bastard
It’s hard to describe this show without giving away key elements. It’s sort of a tough-love self-help show from a guy in a red suit filled with balls. Anyway, he is very talented. Recommended.
Confessions of a Redheaded Coffeeshop Girl
A strong performance, but a weak script. The blocking (thanks, Rick) was pretty basic and uninspired. The show could have done without the singing, which was good but didn’t contribute anything to the story. There wasn’t really much tension in the story.
The Dark Fantastic
Another great surrealist work by Martin. If I remember correctly, he performed the whole work sitting at a table (with a microphone) and yet still managed to mesmerize the audience. Other companies need to take lessons from Martin. Recommended.
The Pit
Very well performed by Martin and Vanessa. Not a deep or complex story, but interesting. A surrealist work, like many of Martin’s. Recommended.
Love’s Trajectory
Pretty weak acting, and characters that just didn’t make sense. No motivation or background was provided to explain their erratic and inexplicable behaviour. The ending was abrupt and odd, too.
The Hound of Ulster
Another great show by the Struts and Frets players. The story moved along well, and was by turns very funny and very moving. These actors just keep getting better, and handle comedy and drama equally well. Recommended!
Jesus’ 13th Video
An interesting concept, but not very well performed. The characters weren’t well defined, and didn’t have much appeal. The conspiracy element also wasn’t well enough defined and seemed to be too complex for the length of the show.
